Life Conhabit Andalusia completes the journeys of Together For Maro-Cerro Gordo with great participation

Professionals from the gardening sector, young and teenage scholars and adults signed up as volunteers and were able to get to know more about the natural richness that is enclosed in the Natura 2000 area of Acantilados de Maro-Cerro, thanks to the journeys that we celebrated for 4 days (Wednesday 4th to Saturday 7th).

An appointment promoted by Life Conhabit Andalusia, as a European project dedicated to the conservation of priority habitats of the Natura 2000 areas of the Andalusian coast – carried out by the Consejería de Medio Ambiente y Ordenación del Territorio – that was also possible thanks to the collaboration of the municipalities of Nerja (Malaga) and Almuñecar (Granada), where this wonderful natural area is located.

Altogether, the journeys had a great participation rate from the beginning, which supposes that the proposed objectives were considerably reached. This was due to the fact that the first session, given on Wednesday, dedicated to highlighting the value of local flora in this area and to explaining the dangers of exotic invasive species, created great interest in the participating gardeners – from both local town halls or private companies – given the high assistance rate during this technical journey.

Scholars also had their turn in the agenda, and they had two days – Thursday and Friday – to give them the same message of protecting the local species of this wonderful space and explaining to them the problem imposed by exotic invasive species.
Thursday was the turn of 9 clases from 5th level of Primary School of up to 5 different centers of Almuñécar, that added up to around 250 students, and Friday was the turn of CEIP Las Maravillas of the Nerja’s district of Maro, that added 80 more students to the activity.

The last journey was a field trip, that took place on Saturday which also got a great response. As it was predicted, the activity took place in the area of the Acantilados of Maro-Cerro Gordo, where numerous people, interested in knowing more about this area, showed up. After giving a brief introduction about the project and the activities being carried out for this Special Area of Conservation (SAC), which included an explanation about the program Natusfera (dedicated to in situ data collection), the journey consisted in valuing the local flora and raising awareness about the problem given by exotic invasive species.
