Workshops, butterflies and games to share the ‘treasures’ of the Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo on World Environment Day

The butterflies, already an iconic symbol of the Natura 2000 Network and the Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo, have played a key role in the celebration of World Environment Day by Life Conhabit Andalusia in Nerja (Malaga).

It involved sharing the excellencies of this space which was part of Life Conhabit and integrated in the referenced European network, making the most of the commemorative day that this 5 June had the motto “I’m with nature”.

To achieve this, and with enjoyment as a prerequisite, the Life Conhabit team planned numerous activities for the event carried out on the Balcón de Europa, the famous viewpoint in Nerja, with the collaboration of the City Council.

Thus, for the little ones and with the butterflies as a main element, there were face paints, an origami workshop to make them and another one on crafts to make bookmarks with them. Educational games have also been developed about the invasive plants to explain their negative influence on the space.

The older ones had the specific photocall of the Natura 2000 Network, as well as different photographs of different corners of the Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo and also their priority habitats. Specifically, the choice of Nerja to hold this day is based on it being one of the towns where the aforementioned natural space is located, which it shares with Almuñécar in Granada.

In the specific case of the Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo, the event intended to convey and share its environmental richness and the need to preserve the 12 habitats of community interest status that it contains, of which 3 have priority status: Posidonia pastures, arborescent shrubs with Zyziphus and subestepic areas of grass and annual plants of the Thero-Brachypodietea.

World Environment Day, this year with the motto “I’m with nature”, is a celebration introduced by the UN 44 years ago and which this 2017 intends an interrelation of the people with the natural environment so that they learn to value it. And specifically, that has been the purpose of the programme of activities carried out by Life Conhabit for the occasion.
