Nearly fifty school children from Estuaria Secondary School in Huelva have been the first to participate in Life Conhabit Andalucía’s programme A Coast with Roots.

Specifically, 49 pupils from the aforementioned school were the ones who “inaugurated” this initiative which belongs to the Aldea programme, on the Pleamar programme, in the whole of the region of Andalusia. The programme will continue this week with 3 more schools in Huelva and tomorrow it will start in Almería. During the month of April, it will continue throughout the rest of the participating coastal provinces. Cádiz, Málaga and Granada.

It has been calculated that there will be around 1.200 students in total participating in this activity during the school year 2016/2017 in the whole of Andalusia.

A Coast with Roots intends to raise awareness among school children in order to educate them, from a young age, about the discovery of the coastal areas of the Natura 2000 Network that surround them and allow them to value their benefits, as well as to promote in them the observation and comprehension of the diversity of species and characteristic plant formations, as well as transferring to them socially integrating knowledge and giving the teacher the necessary teaching material for the development of each activity.

To this end, the programme carries out different activities, adapted to each level of education, in the classroom as well as outside it.
Thus, the initiative starts with a class presentation as a first look at the reality of the coastal habitats, then it continues with a visit to the nearest botanic gardens located on the coast -and belonging to the Network of Botanic Gardens in Natural Spaces, reference centres in conservation and environmental education of the Andalusian plant heritage-.

During the visit, they can see the most characteristic plants of the coast through different games and exploration and investigation workshops and, finally, back in the classroom, it includes activities of reinforcement and reflection on what they have learned.
